Aluminium Composite

27/02/18

As an established and growing company, we have to be ahead in the ever changing world of signage production. Our aim is to create unique and eye catching signage that continues to inspire us and more importantly our customers.

With so many different substrates available these days, it is sometimes difficult to know what is right for your own personal requirements. The choice can seem overwhelming, even intimidating. So we set about looking at the most versatile and widely used of all substrates - 'Aluminium Composite Material (ACM) to see the benefits of using this particular material in sign production.

In an industry where there can be so much waste, ACM, is environmentally friendly and the common non-Fire-Retardant offering (recognisable by it black plastic core) is 100% recyclable. This alone can make it endearing to the consumer, but when you add into the mix the endless ways in which the product can be used and developed it is a win win situation!

ACM is manufactured using two painted thin coil coated aluminium sheets and bonded to a Polyethylene core. This creates a high strength and low weight board. It is very durable and withstands the elements extremely well.

Fire-Retardant aluminium composite is also available (recognisable by its white core), this is widely used in building construction and in signage.

With a life span of between 5 and 10 years, it also gives piece of mind that your sign will have years of longevity.

ACM signage can take on many forms from just a plain panel to a million and one different creations. It is very easy to work with, and can even be cut using a score and snap technique with a Stanley blade and a straight edge. At Butler Signs we use a CNC router to cut the material to shape and with special tooling to cut for folding and welding.

Fixing wise, it can be drilled, screwed, riveted, and bonded.

Applying a design to the board can be produced using different techniques. These can include screen printing and UV print direct to the panel, but laying printed or plain colour vinyl to the ACM is the most widely used form of imagery.

ACM comes in four different thicknesses : 2, 3, 4 & 6 mm sheets, and in various colours.
In addition to this the boards come in various grades:
- Hoarding : Which is usually painted one side
- 0.2 skin : Which is for general sign making
- 0.3 skin : Which is recommended for folding, and is ideal for making sign trays
